Begining of quarter in UIA 2020

Tope Palmares 2020
As a Vet I like to ride horses, every year I like to participate with my friends in differents activities with horses. January, 16, 2020 it was not the exception because I went to Palmares. I enjoyed a lot of the horse-activity and shared with others vets and friends.

Beach trip.
On January 18 -19, 2020, I went to the beach with one of my best friend and her son. They did not know Jacó, so I decided to take them there. We stayed two days there enjoying a lot. I haven´t seen them since last year because they are from Turrialba and I dont usually go to visit them very often.
On January 20, 2020, I went out with some of my friend from San Ana. I have been living close from them because I bought a Condo last year close from there. We spent a great time together because it was Jota´s birthday that day.
Since 2015 I work at the College of Veterinarians. First, I worked in the court of honor with a group of veterinarians to verify people's claims against veterinarians. It was about knowing if the veterinarian committed a bad practice or a mistake in a veterinary procedure. I spent 2 years working with them. In 2017, I agreed to be part of the board of directors as Secretary. I was in charge of many meetings, signing many documents and scheduling meetings, as well as writing many minutes. This year I accepted a new position as treasurer of the board of directors for a period of two years. I will be in charge of the institution's budget and responsible for all investments as well. We have a great project that is to build a new building this year because we have more people working at the moment and they need bigger offices. Also in this position I will need to negotiate with the banks a loan to build the new building and all the conditions to return it. Another project we have is to change the software and all the computers for each person who works there because the computers and the software are very old.
It is a great opportunity to help veterinarians and return something about my knowledge to the Institution.
Last year, we organized a World Veterinary Congress with more than 750 people from different countries. All the topics were excellent and it was the first time that a Latin American country held this type of event. We chose the Costa Rican new Convention Center and it was also the first world congress held there. It was very exciting to see all those people gathered in a room for three full days with international speakers from many countries. This type of experience confirmed that we are prepared to do this type of events and we are planning for 2021 to make another Veterinary Congress similar to this.

Last saturday February, 2nd, 2020 I was invited to a party of my friend Oldemar. He is a nice friend and I met him 10 years ago in other party in Santa Ana. It was a great party because everything was tematic "cow boys", al the tables, the hall had diferent things about it. I enjoyed a lot with almost 50 people that most of them live in Santa Ana too. The party started at 4pm and finished almost 12pm. Food, drinks and music were excellent. Also it was a surprise for Oldemar, he didn´t know anything about the party and everybody was at 4pm in the party room and other friend brought him with an excuse to the place.
We are planning the next party because in two weeks it will be the birthday of others 3 friends from the same group , so I am very happy to help them with all that stuff.

February, 10th, 2020, We are celebrating my father´s birthday, 82 years old. We took him and my mon out to get lunch. Also my brothers and their families came with us. My father was very happy because he loves to see all our family members together. It was a great day, we went to a restaurant in Santa Ana called El Jardín, the food was very good and. The weather was a little windy; however, we spent a great time with them. After that, we went to their house in Desamparados to have coffee and eat a piece of cake. Also, we gave some gifts. Them, I returned to my house to watch the football soccer match between Saprissa and LDA.

February, 23, 2020. Last year I lost my favorite pet. She was a miniature Schnauzer with almost 15 years. When I opened my own veterinary hospital in 2007, I didn't have a pet at that time and another veterinarian who has another veterinary hospital told me the importance of having a pet with me and the pet's interaction with clients. One day, a few days before opening the Hospital, my friend came to visit me and brought me a miniature schnauzer with only 2 months of age. I called her Batsy and since that day she was my pet. Every day, I took her to the hospital and she spent all day with me, then returned home at night with me. This routine passed almost 12 years. Once I sold the Hospital, I took her home to live with me and took her to many places to enjoy a day off. I always went to every place I visited. My friend, my family members knew that Batsy was part of me and my trip. Once she turned 14 years old, she began to have some small masses on the skin, I operated her three times to remove them; However, small masses returned to other skin sites and increasingly. I removed a small piece of one of them and sent it to the laboratory. Once I received the medical report, I knew that all the small masses were a cancer called malignant melanoma. It was very sad, because I knew that cancer causes lung metastases and will kill my pet very soon. Then, I started giving her a better quality life and waiting for the moment to sleep it. The last December of 2019, he started with a respiratory problem, so I took X-rays and that cancer was there as a result of his dyspnea. That was a very sad day, because I made the decision to put her to sleep and stop her suffering. That was the best for her; However, it was a very difficult decision.

March, 08, 2020. Since last month I was taking Business Administration classes, it was a great course that I found online at the University of Fidelitas. The course lasted 5 weeks, I had to go there every Saturday from 8am to 2pm. I learned many things that can help me with my business and how to better invest my money. Also, the course was so good that I negotiated with the teacher to implement the course at The College of Veterinarians to other veterinarians. We extend the invitation to the vets and the course will start next week with almost 25 vets and I will help the teacher with all the logistics. The course will cost 40 thousand colones per person and that includes all the materials such as a notebook, calculator, an anthology with all the practices throughout the course. In addition, we will give each veterinarian a certificate of participation and some credits that will help them meet the total update credits that are part of their obligations each year. This is an excellent opportunity to learn more about topics like human resources, responsibility, marketing and negotiation techniques.

My college application essay /Cristian Naranjo
I was born in Costa Rica, I am 46 years old, I am Veterinarian, graduated from the National University of Costa Rica with 23 years of experience in the area of animal medicine. Within my professional experience, I carried out my graduation final project in wildlife animals and was part of an important team of Costa Rican researchers, managing for the first time to publish in a medicine magazine the blood values and normal blood biochemical parameters of a species known as Agouti paca or Tepezcuintle. Therefore, I was chosen for a one-year scholarship to work and learn more about Wildlife Medicine at a School of Veterinary Medicine in Hannover-Germany, being able to work with Veterinary Doctors who are well known for publications in books and magazines. Once I returned to Costa Rica, I started working on the pharmaceutical market and I lasted 11 years focused on the commercial and technical management of veterinary products for Companion Animals segment, working with the best pharmaceutical company named Pfizer. Additionally, I finished my master's degree in Animals Tropical Diseases. Then, I started as an entrepreneur in a Veterinary Clinic specialized in companion animals which I was the owner and main doctor for 12 years. Having passed through different fields of medicine allowed me a great learning experience in many areas of Veterinary Medicine, being my knowledge in medical and pharmaceutical products my main strength, that it can permit me be different from other veterinary doctors. In addition, since 6 years I have been involved in different administrative and Board of Directors positions at the Costa Rican´s College of Veterinary Doctors.
Since last year, I started my second profession at UIA University, the field of English, specifically in the area of translation. This career lasts approximately 3 years and I am currently studying my third semester. The knowledge of the English language is something that I am passionate about and since I was young I wanted to learn it in a professional way, knowing from the roots of the language as such, improving pronunciation and areas such as writing and oral expression as much as possible. The UIA university study program is very complete and after looking for other options with similar professions I chose the translation because it is the one that meets my expectations.
The English translation career allows working in many fields, from the translation of a variety of official and non-official documents, interpretation or translation in speeches; however, I have not found that English translation with medicine specialization could be very common. Most English translators in this field have been getting their knowledge in these fields in an empirical way, participating in translation jobs where they have increased their English vocabulary in medical terminology, but without any preparation in the medical field in general, in my case on many occasions that I have been participating listening to medical translations in speeches, the English translators made many mistakes or the English translation was very poor quality.
My future goal is to be able to work as a professional in medical English translation, since I have the strengths of having initially studied a medical career for 7 years, with a title that accredits me as a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine; in addition, my master's degree in Animal Tropical Diseases and my professional experience for more than 23 years, for which I consider that I have the necessary bases to be able to work as a translator in the area of medicine, being able to collaborate with more criteria for highly specialized English translations than for those who do not have that medical knowledge. Also, being a person very dedicated to study, with very clear goals in my life and very committed on what I do in all areas of my life.
My interest is to continue studying in the area of English translation with an emphasis on medical translation and to be working in this field in the short term, helping companies that need the translation service to be able to communicate with Spanish-speaking patients, translations or simultaneous interpretations of speeches for human or veterinary areas, as well as official and non-official documentation that requires medical knowledge to achieve them.
This is why I consider that I have enough medical bases from my previous training to be considered within your institution to participate in as a student with a scholarship to continue studying to become an English translator. I consider myself a very organized, intelligent and at the same time very mature person who is clear about his goals and who not only wants to seek acceptance in whatever it takes to satisfy his needs for a degree, Besides, I have the availability of time and financial support to be able to travel to their institution in case they allow me to be a regular student for the next semester. I am sure that I will leave your institution very high, because if something characterizes me it is to be a very hard-working person and with a great commitment to always seek academic excellence, so I inform my curriculum and my personal data so that they contact me if they consider it so.

This month, as a personal project, Dos Pinos asked me to make some videos on the most frequently questions pet owners ask when they take their pets to the vet. These videos are part of an activity that the Dos Pinos company is doing on social medial specially Facebook and Instragram to entertain its customers and followers during Easter and quarantine. All the videos had to be recorded with basic content and vocabulary and leaving a teaching for pet owners, seeking that they could be understood by all kinds of people who want to see them. These videos, in addition to other activities, are broadcast every 2 days with similar topics. If people who watch them have questions, they can do them through the Facebook ad Instragram page and must give an answer to their doubt. There were 10 videos for this month and we are in talks for new videos next month. I will show you only some videos to get an idea of their content. It was a new experience of job, it was something different as a vet and I liked it because this was a new way to share my knowledge with all people.
About two years ago, before selling my veterinary hospital, I had bought two canaries to keep them in my house; however, they were still very young and could not know if they were male or female. The previous owner of the canaries told me that until 9 months of age the males began to sing and that this was the way to differentiate gender. During all this time I kept the canaries together in a single cage and I have never heard any sing; however, there was a behavior as they were male and female, since they spent a lot of time with paper in their beaks. One day I was feeding them and I found an egg on the floor of the cage, so I was sure that one of them was a female. I went to a pet store and bought a nest and installed it in the cage and they immediately started filling it with pieces of paper. A month later I saw that there were 4 eggs in the nest and one of the canaries spent all the time incubating the eggs, to my surprise 10 days ago two canary babies were born and currently their parents spend the whole day taking care of them and feeding them. Now the family of canaries has grown to 4 canaries and I hope to see them leave the nest soon. I have been reading about their reproduction and it is quite easy but they are very delicate stage during the first month of birth, so I have been taking good care of them.
Composition II
Describe a learning experience from taking care of an animal or a child.
As a vet, I have many pleasant experiences caring for animals; However, there were some experiences that I will never forget due to the complication of the case.
When I was working as a veterinarian, I had a veterinary hospital in Desamparados and I always like to help street animals, so I had a group of people from different parts of Costa Rica who, when they saw a bad animal, used to catch it and take it to my hospital to help him, once the animal recovered, they looked for a home for him.
One of these guys called me one day, because he was in Guapiles and a dog in very bad condition was walking down the street. He caught him with a net and quickly took him to my hospital.
I had never seen an animal in such a condition before, the dog had many lessons of fur around the entire body, some parts of the fur had no fur, and the claws were too large that some of them had crossed the skin that I did not know how walks that poor animal.
I remember that we washed it and that there were many parasites on the skin such as fleas, ticks and lice. Also, we shave it to expose the skin and start the treatment. I sent skin samples to the lab and the result was that that poor dog was full of fungus and also had a bad blood disease called Erlichiosis due to ticks.
I thought the poor dog couldn't survive, but after a week, with the right treatment, he was recovering step by step, first, he started to gain weight, skin problems started to improve, and the coat started to grow healthy; however, the dog maintained very severe anemia due to Erliquia.
After three blood samples, the anemia did not improve, so I made the decision to do a transfusion to increase blood parameters. A friend of mine had a Rotweiller who was a large, healthy dog and I took almost 700 ml of fresh blood and transfused that dog. Then, the dog was another, with more energy, more active and his condition changed completely.
Two months later, that dog was healthy, he gained almost 12 kilograms during those days and it was time to find him a home. I published the dog and its history and a family from San Carlos decided to adopt it. They had a kind of farm and I took the dog there. I have been in contact with that family for a while and they sent me photos of that dog running, enjoying his life as a normal dog.
It is very nice to help people or animals, but I think animals are more grateful than people. Animals in poor condition look so helpless that I hope many people can do the same as me; however, the cost of saving an animal is very high and many of those costs were borne by me and not everyone can do it. I always recommend donating money to vets who help animals help them with bills. I will never regret helping animals, it is something that fills your soul and only brings blessing to your life.

"Costa Rica will not be longer “Central American Switzerland” for foreigners who want to enter this country in the face of this COVID 19 pandemic
Historically, Costa Rica has been popularly known by the name "Central American Switzerland" for being a country different from the others. A country surrounded by a lot of vegetation, with high biodiversity, many volcanoes throughout the country, for its educated people, for being peaceful, and without having an army for 70 years. However, due to the global situation of COVID 19 pandemic, it had had to stop being the country that always had its borders open to foreign tourists. A country that welcomed any foreigner with open arms to live or make some kind of investment. In addition, for many years we have received miles from Nicaraguans who have considered this country as their own country, where they have seen their children grow and have found sources of work to financially support their relatives in their country.
Since March 11, 2020, which was confirmed by the Ministry of Health the first positive case of COVID 19, the government and Health Ministry had to implement extreme measures to control the arrival of more foreign people with the COVID 19 virus. Due to tourisms as main source of foreign exchange, we put ourselves at a very high risk of possible new cases of the COVID 19 virus from foreigners.
That is why as a national guideline were implemented two extreme measures to stop possible new contagions from foreigners: 1) The prohibition of the entry of foreign people by air, sea, land or river and 2) The loss of their immigration status to anyone who left Costa Rica and wanted to return again before the official opening of borders.
The first measure was the prohibition of entry of any foreign person by air, sea, land or river to Costa Rica. With this measure, there was a total closure of borders for foreigners, including all tourists, even if they came from countries free of COVID 19. This measure was done because the virus entered Costa Rica through a couple of French foreign tourists who were in our country on vacation. A measure that strongly affected the economic situation of small and large entrepreneurs who depend on tourism. However, due to the large number of tourists who visit us each year, this measure is implemented until the pandemic situation is somewhat normalized worldwide. In addition, this measure comes to reinforce the second measure that is taken with respect to many Nicaraguan foreigners who at the time are moving to their native country because of the Easter week.
The second measure of importance was the loss of immigration status to any foreigner who left the country and wanted to return to Costa Rica before the official opening of borders. The vast majority of foreigners living in our country are Nicaraguan and around Easter week they usually return to their country to visit their relatives; however, the neighboring country has not taken any measure of social distancing, closure of its borders, vehicle restrictions and prohibitions of massive events. For this reason, it was suspected that the virus was going to strongly affect Nicaragua and was an enormous source of contact for our country when these people wanted to return to Costa Rica again. It is for this reason that our country warned of the loss of their immigration status to all foreign people who left the country and wanted to return again before the official opening of borders.
In conclusion, Costa Rica has taken all precautions to prevent the COVID 19 virus from having a strong impact on our population, for which reason it is forced to implement these two measures to close the borders and lose the immigration status of foreigners. However, this second measure has been omitted by many foreigners from Nicaragua and they have been responsible for the increase in many new positive cases so far. Despite all this, this country has handled the situation in a very humanitarian way and has not stopped supporting any foreigner who is positive for the disease; providing all medications, medical care necessary due to being a global public health problem. The latter has made us continue to be Central American Switzerland for many sick foreigners who have needed medical help; situation that leaves this small country very high on issues of solidarity and human rights. This act prides us as Costa Ricans in being able to offer a helping hand to all those who have needed it without questioning how they became infected or where they came from.
Great Costa Rica !!! Pura Vida!!!

What makes football so popular in Costa Rica?
Soccer in Costa Rica is almost as traditional as eating gallo pinto for breakfast. It is the most popular sport in the country compared to any other sport. Most children practice it from the moment they learn to walk; regardless of whether they are male or female. In all the cities and schools of Costa Rica you can find a soccer field. It is common in rural areas to watch soccer games on Sundays where entire families participate supporting a team, and also in many occasions a family member is part of one of the teams.
In general, men are more passionate about the game than women, but there are many girl´s fans who follow soccer teams and visit stadiums. Every time which one of the main teams in Costa Rica plays, bars or restaurants are full of people who support their team and many of them are wearing special shirts from their favorite team. Soccer is an important part of the culture of Costa Rica. Every Monday in the workplace, football results are discussed among co-workers, and even people's motivation is related to the outcome of matches.
I agree with the author of the blog with all the reasons that explain why soccer is so popular around the world compared to many other sports that are practiced in each country; however, in Costa Rica I consider soccer to be very popular due to 5 reasons such as: soccer and its trajectory, soccer and its most important moments, great Costa Rican players who play internationally, "the traditional mejenga" and unforgettable family moments supporting your favorite team.
Soccer and its history is one of the most important reasons that make this sport more popular compared to other sports. Since 1876, there are reports that soccer was already practiced in Costa Rica. The first matches between amateur teams were held at La Sabana park. Then, in 1921, the Costa Rican Football Federation was created and from that moment many of the teams that currently exist were founded, such as Saprissa, LDA, Heredia, and Costa Rican National Team. Soccer definitely has one of the longest trajectories in our country, which has been one of the main reasons why it is the most popular sport in Costa Rica compared to other sports disciplines.
Soccer has had very important international moments that we can never forget in Costa Rica. Compared to other disciplines, it is the sport that has brought the most happiness to our country; therefore, many people from other countries realize where this little piece of land is located. Costa Rica soccer National team has participated in 4 world cups since 1990. It has had to participate in groups with other countries considered superior by their professional leagues; however, our team has been able to play better and win some important matches against Italy, Uruguay, Sweden, Scotland and Greece. These moments have been very significant for Costa Rica and of great emotion as a country that we can never forget in comparison with other sports disciplines.
There are Costa Rican players playing soccer internationally that inspire many young people in our country to follow them. With the facility of technology, nowadays we can follow soccer matches from other countries where Costa Rican players stand out. The goalkeeper Keylor Navas, who had an excellent participation in Real Madrid soccer team for several years, was considered among the 5 best soccer goalkeepers in the world. Other soccer players like Bryan Ruiz, Joel Campbell and some others also make many people from Costa Rica their fans. This reason means that every weekend, there are much more news in the national television channel about the trajectory of these players, compared to other athletes who practice some sport in another country. This mainly reinforces the idea that the soccer is the most popular sport in our country.
The "traditional mejenga" is another reason why soccer is more popular than other sports in our country. Many young and old people form their teams and reserve a private soccer field to play against other teams. This is known as "Futbol 5" and it is a form of practicing sport in Costa Rica that has become very popular. Compared to other sports disciplines, it is not difficult to access other sports on private fields other than soccer. This way of having fun has become so popular in our country that soccer is increasingly becoming the sport of choice compared to others.
Families who support their team of choice is undoubtedly another reason why soccer is more popular than other sports. Every weekend and even during the week, some soccer games are broadcast on national television channels; so it is very common for all family members to come together to watch the game and support their favorite team. They are important moments where family and friends get together with food and drinks to enjoy a soccer game; especially when they are games of the Costa Rica National Soccer Team. This frequency of soccer matches is not observed compared to other sports disciplines, which is once again the reason why the popularity of soccer in Costa Rica has increased.
In conclusion, I agree with the author of the blog that there are many other factors that have made soccer as a sports discipline more popular than any other sportaround the world; nevertheless, each country will have its different reasons
that have made this sport so popular in that country. Costa Rica is a small country compared to other countries where soccer is practiced with greater economic investment than ours; however, in our country we enjoy it to the fullest and it allows us to spend moments of great happiness with family, friends, co-workers, and in a country where we can participate peacefully visiting the stadiums to support our favorite team. Soccer in Costa Rica is more than a sport; it is culture; it is health; it is emotion; it is admiration and recognition for the efforts of many players. But most importantly, it is one of the most popular traditions of being Costa Rican that join people.

After the quarantine is over, should all governments consider periodic seclusion periods to give a break to Nature?
Costa Rica is a small country; however, it has approximately 5% of the planet's biodiversity. This important data means that we have close contact with many animals wherever we move. It is normal to observe wild animals like raccoons, foxes, sloths, monkeys, wild cats, deer and birds of all kinds anywhere. In this moment of quarantine due to COVID 19, we have had the opportunity to see reports of wild animals that have returned to some places where people are habitually inhabited, such as national parks, hotels, beaches and many other places.
The government should consider some post-quarantine strategies to reduce the number of people in highly populated wildlife locations. So wild animals can walk freely without fear and be at risk from human contact. Studies conducted at the National University of Costa Rica in certain national parks have shown that continuous contact of wild animals with humans can affect the reproduction of wild animals, decrease the population of wild animals due to car accidents and increase health problems of wildlife due to dog parasites, causing their extinction in places where it was common to see them in the past.
The continuous contact of people with wild animals can affect their reproduction. Wild animals are stressed when humans are close to their environment. Many species of wild animals reproduce in summer. At the same time, it coincides with the visit of many people to areas such as beaches, national parks and many other tourist places. For example, according to some UNA studies, Titi and the white-faced monkeys in Manuel Antonio National Park spend a lot of time in contact with tourists looking for food and forgetting about reproduction. Any measure that the government might implement after quarantine to prevent people from visiting those places in the summer; it will bring benefits on the reproduction of wild animals.
The decline in the population of wild animals due to car accidents has been widely demonstrated. Wild animals need to move from one forest to another; however, in many places there are streets that must be crossed. This causes many animals to die from car accidents when they try to cross the streets. In this pandemic where car use has been limited due to restrictions, many fewer wild animals die due to this problem. An example of this, many tourists who take advantage of their vacations to go to places like beaches, national parks, where there is also a lot of wildlife; tourist cause many deaths of animals due to cars. Any measures the government can implement after this quarantine to reduce overcrowding of tourists at those sites could help prevent further reduction of wildlife.
The increase in parasites in wild animals due to contact with domestic animals is another cause that affects them. People always travel with their pets for a walk and take them to places where there are wild animals. In those places, pets defecate and leave their feces, which may have parasites. These feces come into contact with wild animals causing them to become ill with parasites that are not common in them. For example, there is a common parasite in dogs called "Ancylostoma caninum" that has been found in different samples of feces from wild animals in studies at the National University. Any measure that the government might implement would make fewer people have contact with these areas and therefore there would be fewer pets in those places.
In conclusion, after this pandemic and with the evidence that wild animals have begun to return to places where they have not seen for a long time; It is necessary for the government to initiate a plan to decrease in certain months of the year that people visit places where there are many wild animals. This would bring benefits such as improving the reproduction of certain species of wild animals, reducing accidents and death of wild animals and reducing contamination with domestic parasites towards them. Since Costa Rica is an ecological country, there should be a clear strategy by the government to take care of the country's biodiversity.

Fashion, a great strategy from the leading British clothing companies.
How much do Real Royal and famous people influence fashion today? The royal fashion of British culture has managed to influence world fashion. Of all the courses offered in the link sent, the one that hooks me most is "A History of Real Fashion". This is because since I was born grown up listening to many people they always talk about people of British royalty and their clothing. There are other recognized people who are followed by many fans around the world in addition to the British royal family such as the famous footballer David Beckham, the singer Elton John and actors like Terence Stamp or Cary Grant who has also set trends in the fashion business. The fashion business worldwide is one of the most lucrative economic activities due to two strategies: they are always at the forefront of fashion and highlight the traditional clothing combined with the new in the market.
Large clothing manufacturing companies must always be at the forefront with new styles or market trends. Famous designers and large British companies such as Burberry, Ben Sherman, Hawkins, and Joseph are famous for their activities with their models showing off their latest collections worldwide. This generates that many other stores seek to offer their new lines, being a very lucrative business for the sale of clothing and new styles. For example, I know people especially women who always want to dress like models look. These people make huge investments in buying new pieces of clothing every year. Being at the forefront is necessary for these British companies to offer their latest collections that will later be purchased by miles of stores around the world.
Traditional never goes out of style. One of the strategies that large companies that sell clothing achieve is to always combine the new with traditional clothing. This helps to keep selling clothes from other old trends with new styles. For example, many people wear shoes from other eras with new clothing styles just because a model girl uses outfits that way. Sometimes famous designers re-launch a clothing trend that was used many years ago. This makes many young adults wear these types of clothing believing that they are new pieces of clothing and only because they are exhibited by famous people sometimes to buy immediately. Launching clothing based on tradition is an excellent strategy combined with new clothing items to achieve higher and consistent sales of clothing in the market.
In conclusion, the royal fashions of famous British personalities will always impact clothing trends globally. Famous companies use their strategies using the image of these famous personalities to combine new cutting-edge trends with tradition as a way to reach more customers worldwide. The textile business will never cease to exist because people will always need to dress well and are happy being the ones who wear fashionable clothes.
